Dräger Respiratory Care Speaker Tour 2009
November 2009
Enabling spontaneous breathing during mechanical ventilation or weaning a patient rapidly and carefully from the ventilator are important requirements in respiratory care. These requirements do not only apply to adult critical care patients, but also to our smallest patients as well. The demands to provide precise and gentle ventilation are even more crucial and challenging in neonatal care practice due to the neonate’s immature respiratory system and the risk of further lung damage that may occur.
The Dräger Respiratory Care Speaker Tour 2009 addresses central issues of respiratory care. International high-ranked researchers and ventilation experts have invited medical professionals on two continents to take part in lectures and panel discussions. The prestigious symposia which have begun in July 2009 in China and Thailand have introduced new innovations to improve mechanical ventilation.
Professor Colin Morley introduces best practice models in neonatal ventilation
The last highlight of the Dräger Respiratory Care Speaker Tour 2009 took place on November 9th 2009, when the neonatologist Professor Colin Morley gave an educational and interactive presentation to discuss flow wave interpretation in neonatal ventilation. The presentation took place at a special event to be held at the Melbourne Zoo.
Professor Morley who retired from the Royal Women’s Hospital and The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne in September 2008, started his academic career at the University of Cambridge and Addenbrookes Hospital in the UK. He has developed a number of innovations as for example a synthetic surfactant treatment for premature babies and a scoring system to evaluate the severity of an infant’s illness. The author of over 240 manuscripts is still an active researcher. Part of the current research of professor Morley is investigating neonatal resuscitation, nasal CPAP and mechanical ventilation. He also is a co-recipient of a five year program grant of the Australian NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) to investigate lung disease in premature babies.
First-hand respiratory knowledge from Professor Christian Putensen
At four locations in China and Thailand professor Christian Putensen, Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, University of Bonn, Germany talked about current developments in respiratory care. With over 240 medical professionals professor Putensen discussed topics of recent interest as benefits of spontaneous breathing during mechanical ventilation, whether assisted breathing is better in acute respiratory failure and current developments of automatic weaning protocols.
“Medical professionals benefited from expertise imparted at the tour events in Asia”, emphasized Robert Sun, Marketing Manager, Dräger Asia-Pacific. “The Dräger Respiratory Care Speaker Tour served as an excellent platform for respiratory care professionals to gain exclusive insights into advanced respiratory technologies and therapies. The knowledge gained helps clinical communities to improve general patient outcomes”, added Robert Sun.
Webinar with professor Putensen
As a leading medical researcher in respiratory medication and technology, professor Putensen has received numerous accolades for his role in improving respiratory care through his methodology and research for more than two decades. He is currently Director of the Division of Intensive Care Medicine and Vice Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Bonn.
