Are you fit: The medical aptitude test.
Respiratory protection devices put stress on those using them. For this reason, the physical fitness of the user must be determined in a preliminary examination followed by periodic physical check-ups.

When examining the user, the doctor gives consideration to the workplace conditions, level of work, climate and the length of time that the respiratory protective device is worn.

In Germany, for example, accident prevention regulations of the employer's liability insurance require a G26 preliminary medical examination for determining whether a user is suitable for wearing a device.

Your local regulatory requirements should be observed and taken into consideration.

  • Group 1: Device weight of up to 3 kg, low breathing resistances, e.g. filtering devices with particulate filters of class 1 and 2, as well as particulate filtering face pieces, power-assisted filtering devices with half and full masks, and compressed air light-dusty airline devices.
  • Group 2: Device weight of up to 5 kg, greater breathing resistances, e.g. filtering devices with particle filters of class 3, with gas or combination filters of all classes.
  • Group 3: For the following devices no physical fitness tests are required:
    - Device in group 1 which are used for less than one half hour per day.
    - Devices weighing less than 3kg which have no breathing resistance. (e.g. Powered Air purifying Respirators with a hood or helmet and airline breathing apparatus)

Time limits on useage equipment
There are wearing time limitations for different respiratory protection devices to avoid subjecting the wearer to excessive stress. Wearing times depend on many factors and can therefore vary widely. For example, under the G26 medical examinations devices are categorized under the following three groups depending upon their weight and breathing resistance. Devices may be classified according to the level of stress which is placed on the user.
Attached you can find detail information regarding factors and limitations on wearing time.
