Mobile, realistic and safe – Training in entry procedures and familiarization with work in confined spaces
It goes without saying that there are numerous risks involved in working in sewage ducts, containers, manholes and other confined or enclosed spaces. Such work requires total concentration, the best possible level of physical fitness, and an extensive knowledge of the potential hazards. Typical situations in which personnel interact directly with machinery include repair, inspection, maintenance and cleaning work; this is when routine production processes are interrupted and systems are accessed, giving rise to new risks which differ from those encountered during normal operation and which in many cases are not recognized by personnel. To address this situation, Dräger Safety has designed a new type of mobile training gallery to train personnel in how to enter confined spaces.
Theory and practice adapted to individual needs
A typical training course in the mobile CSE (Confined Space Entry) gallery arms personnel with vital knowledge through theoretical instruction. Highly professional trainers teach them the basic principles and contents of regulations and ordinances, as well as how to identify and assess hazards. Potential hazard situations are analysed and specific rescue techniques explained. Next, potential hazard situations are simulated in the training gallery as realistically as possible with a view to training personnel who work in confined spaces, ducts or containers, or who have to rescue people from such areas or supervise such rescue operations, e.g. municipal drainage companies, works fire brigades, accident prevention and insurance associations and supply and disposal companies in general. During a range of exercises the participants have to overcome various difficulties (e.g. toxic vapours simulated by a smoke machine or constant breathing air control). The training gallery is equipped with different gas warning devices, calibration stations and safety harnesses. Participants use their own personal protective equipment during the training; on request it is also possible to use the company's own gas warning devices and safety harnesses. It takes less than an hour to set up the mobile training gallery on site. All that is needed is an area measuring 10 x 10 metres and a simple power supply connection. If weather conditions so dictate, the gallery can also be erected in a suitable hall. Theory and practice are adapted to the customer's individual needs; entry to different types of manholes and gullies can be selected as required, as can different scenarios to practice work such as tightening screws or valves in ducts.
The Dräger Safety East branch organized two symposia dedicated to the CSE gallery – one in Dresden at the end of January and the other in Leipzig in mid March – entitled "Work In and Rescue from Confined Spaces“. The events were attended not only by a large number of customers, but also by members of accident prevention and insurance associations, community and accident insurance companies and ministries. The supporting programme staged during the symposia shed light on the relevant regulations for confined spaces, all-clear measurements for containers and manholes, personal protective equipment and the seminars on offer from our Dräger Safety Academy relating to work and instructions for work in containers and confined spaces. Symposium participants were given the chance to climb into the gallery while wearing compressed air breathing apparatus so as to experience the training potential of the CSE gallery for themselves. In addition to the events staged in the Region East, the new training gallery was also successfully presented and made available for practical exercises in early April at the international trade fair GAS Berlin.
Dräger Safety Solutions: your competent partner
The mobile CSE training gallery is another important product on offer from Dräger Safety Solutions to help solving the problems currently faced by our customers. Thanks to excellent cooperation between Dräger Safety, our customers' safety engineers, insurance associations and community and accident insurance companies, all of whom contributed a whole host of suggestions and ideas, a highly realistic training module has been created. This allows Dräger Safety to increase the safety of personnel and facilities by applying a sophisticated theoretical approach and a high level of flexibility. As a partner for all matters relevant to safety, we help our customers to improve their own safety through thorough training and organizational preparation, while at the same time ensuring they comply with the legal regulations (e.g. for regular training of personnel).
