Protection Against Hazardous Substances
When working in low-oxygen atmospheres, i.e. below 17 percent by volume, personnel must be provided with supplied air breathing apparatus, since standard filtering devices are not sufficient.
Self contained breathing apparatus sets offer a limited supply of air from cylinders for shorter operations. Depending on the application in hand, normal or mini compressed air sets can be used. For longer operations at fixed or mobile sites, compressed airline systems are preferred.
If the hazards, e.g. from chemicals, are likely to attack not only the airways but the entire body, chemical protective suits will also need to be used.
