Profile of Rick Rochford

Captain Rick Rochford wants to put an end to line of duty deaths related to Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) and Carbon Monoxide (CO). For the past three years, he has been conducting documented research on the toxic properties of these gases in structure fires, writing several articles on the subject. He shares his findings by giving seminars to fire departments across the country. He hopes that this education and awareness will allow more firefighters to enjoy the fruits of their labor when they retire.

Rochford's presentations have helped departments change the way they approach fires. For example, many now realize that atmospheric air monitoring equipment has a profound importance outside of HazMat responses. Protocols are now being implemented to address the hazards of HCN and CO and to improve the medical treatment of firefighters and victims harmed in these highly toxic environments.

A 26-year veteran with the Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department, Rochford is a Field Incident Safety Officer in the Second Battalion and a member in good standing with IAFF Local 122.
