Firefighters told us what they needed. We listened.
—The Dräger PSS® AirBoss is now officially certified to the NFPA 1970:2025 Edition standard. From the first concept to the final build, North American firefighters helped shape this SCBA. You demanded a system that moves with you, supports your style of attack, and reduces stress in high intensity conditions.
This is the next level of readiness. This is the AirBoss age.

Dräger PSS AirBoss - NFPA-Certified SCBA - System Introduction
To design our best ever SCBA, our engineers listened to the needs of North American firefighters, examined many options, tested materials and didn’t stop tweaking the design until they believed they had reached the optimum SCBA.
Proven in the field. Ready for Canada
—Canadian firefighters work in environments that break weak equipment. They push deeper, stay longer, and operate under conditions that expose hesitation, imbalance, and inconsistency immediately. They need air that delivers without delay, systems that move with the body under load, and protection that performs the same when fatigue sets in as it does at the start of the job.
The Dräger AirBoss was built to answer that reality. Shaped through direct engagement with North American fire departments, refined through real fireground use, and engineered to stay predictable under pressure, it removes friction instead of adding features. It doesn’t ask firefighters to adapt to the equipment — it adapts to them.

—Built to Breathe
—As the inventor of the modern-day SCBAs specifically for firefighters, this year marks 85 years since that first Dräger SCBA. The Dräger AirBoss SCBA provides the most robust breathing protection combined with unparalleled ergonomic comfort. Dräger proudly offers the latest SCBA with extensive updates.

Certified to 2025 NFPA Standard
Trust begins with standards. AirBoss meets the 2025 edition of NFPA requirements for SCBA and PASS. AirBoss meets the 2025 Edition of NFPA 1970 for SCBA and PASS. Every component — facepiece, harness, pneumatics, electronics, PASS, HUD, cylinders, and overall platform — passed the full battery of required testing. Certification supports grant eligibility, including federal programs such as AFG. NFPA compliance is the baseline of trust. AirBoss meets the standard — and is engineered for the realities beyond it.

Reliable Delivery of Air
Every breath must arrive exactly when it is needed. The AirBoss regulator delivers high-flow air the instant the firefighter pulls for it — whether climbing, crawling, searching, or advancing deeper into the structure. There is no lag. No fluctuation. No second of hesitation. If intentionally disconnected, airflow shuts off automatically to preserve cylinder air. When reconnecting, the non-indexing, 360-degree coupling guides the regulator into place from any angle, sealing quickly even in zero visibility. The result is breathing that feels natural and steady from entry to overhaul — air that responds as hard as the firefighter does.

Muscle Memory
Firefighters build muscle memory over years of repetition — reaching for the regulator in zero visibility, locating a gauge without looking, operating by instinct under pressure. AirBoss is designed to honor those habits, not replace them. Departments can configure regulator placement and gauge routing to match established practice. Hoses stay close to the body to reduce snag risk while preserving freedom of movement. Firefighters do not have to relearn core motions when adopting AirBoss. The system adapts to them, shortening transition time and reducing cognitive load when instinct must take over.

Weight & Ergonomic Balance
Firefighters notice weight not by the number on a scale, but by where that weight sits and how it behaves during movement. AirBoss reshapes weight to work with the body. The cylinder rides closer, tightening the profile and lowering the center of gravity. Load shifts onto the hips instead of dragging down the shoulders. The pack settles into posture rather than collapsing forward. Because the weight stays close and centered, sway drops during movement. Stairs feel steadier. Crawling feels smoother. Quick turns feel controlled. Less strain delivers better balance and longer endurance.

Rugged Construction & Materials
Reliable performance is proven after repeated exposure to heat, impact, and abrasion. The AirBoss back frame is engineered to handle drag loads and sustained stress without losing alignment. Harness materials withstand heat and friction while maintaining shape and support. Critical components are protected and positioned to reduce snag risk during rescues and confined movement. Materials are selected not only for strength, but for consistency — ensuring the SCBA feels and performs the same after prolonged use as it did on day one. AirBoss is built to take the beating the job delivers without changing how it behaves.

Buddy Lights for Team Awareness
Firefighters rarely work alone. In smoke and noise, crews need to read each other instantly. AirBoss Buddy Lights broadcast air status outward in real time. Blue signals above 50%, yellow below 50%, and red at low air. One glance through smoke tells the team who is stable, who is approaching rotation, and who needs attention. No tapping shoulders. No radio traffic. In a distress situation, Buddy Lights reinforce audible alarms from multiple angles, helping crews locate a downed firefighter faster. Awareness extends beyond the individual — making air management visible to the entire team.

Lower Center of Gravity
Where weight sits matters more than how much it weighs. AirBoss lowers and centers the cylinder, reducing the top-heavy effect that pulls firefighters backward or off balance. With mass closer to the body, the pack does not sway during movement. Crawling feels smoother. Stairs feel steadier. Quick directional changes feel controlled instead of jarring. By managing leverage instead of simply reducing ounces, AirBoss feels dramatically lighter in motion and preserves balance when conditions get uneven.

AirBoss Sentinel Air Monitoring
AirBoss Sentinel integrates pressure monitoring and status display into one clear, multifunction unit. Remaining air updates automatically based on actual breathing rate — reflecting real exertion instead of static assumptions. Firefighters confirm their status with a glance rather than a sequence of checks. The system monitors continuously without menus or manual input. Alerts escalate automatically when thresholds are crossed. Sentinel works quietly in the background, calculating, tracking, and signaling so firefighters can stay focused on movement and task execution instead of equipment interpretation.

Easy-Clean Harness Materials
Cleaning should not feel like a second shift. AirBoss uses flame-resistant, rubberized harness materials that shrug off soot and grime instead of soaking them in. Weight stays consistent from entry to exit, reducing fatigue and preventing contaminants from settling deep into fabric. Quick wipe-downs often restore the harness to ready status on scene. When paired with Dräger BlueClean systems, cleaning becomes faster and more consistent, supporting modern decontamination workflows and faster return to service.

Tool-Free Assembly & Decon
Serviceability determines readiness. AirBoss harness components break down without tools for fast cleaning and inspection, while sealed pneumatics protect the breathing system during decontamination. Smooth, non-absorbent materials shed soot and moisture rather than trapping contaminants. When paired with Dräger BlueClean — including WashBoss washers and DryBoss drying systems — departments gain a validated, repeatable cleaning workflow that shortens turnaround time and reinforces consistent hygiene standards. Faster decon means less bench time and quicker return to operational status.
