The Fire Ground
—Over the course of the past few years as concern and awareness regarding occupational cancer has escalated, most Fire Departments acknowledge Fire Ground where a majority of the dangers that can adversely impact the health and safety of today’s Firefighters.
Dräger offers a variety of products that address health and safety during all phases of a fire — throughout the Fire Ground, and training. Every Fire Department and each jurisdiction varies. The products and firefighting tactics highlighted in this document only provide some suggestions of potential use. Chiefs and Command Officers may consider how to optimize the use of Dräger resources on the Fire Ground.

The Fire Ground: Hot Zone
The Hot Zone — also known as the exclusion zone — is the area with the highest potential for exposure to hazardous substances dangerous to life and health. Most firefighters would recognize this as the IDLH, or immediate danger to life and health. Inside a Hot Zone, all personnel should be wearing an SCBA and PPE.

The Fire Ground: Warm Zone
The Warm Zone is where contamination reduction occurs. It serves as a transition area between the Hot and Cold zones. Decontamination efforts along with some support may occur in the Warm Zone. Constant monitoring should occur to assure appropriate levels of breathing protection and PPE are worn.

The Fire Ground: Cold Zone
The Cold Zone is the area free from contamination and that may be safely used as a planning and staging area. Command, rehab, and medical support is often staged here.

Gas Detection on the Fire Ground
Toxic gases from a fire or other dangerous Incidents cannot be contained. Weather conditions, circumstances in an incident, and more can move smoke and gas beyond the borders of the IDLH or Warm Zone. Constant toxic gas and visual monitoring is required.

APR on the Fire Ground
Smoke knows no boundaries. Weather conditions can shift where this particulate-laden danger goes. Even when toxic gases are properly monitored, the long-term affects of smoke exposure requires some mitigation. Air-purifying respirators may serve as a cost-effective way to protect all personnel on the Fire Ground.
