Burn Buildings - Live Training Systems for Firefighters

Learning to recognize warning signs and react accordingly are skills critical to every firefighter. The Dräger Swede Phase 1 Burn Building helps prepare fire departments for flashovers — one of the most dangerous risks in any fire. The Phase 1 provides a controlled environment specially engineered for learning and built to last.

The Phase 1 burn building enables simulation of fire behavior, progression, flashover indicators, as well as prevention techniques. Trainees from your department can closely observe typical fire behavior three feet below the burn chamber. Firefighters will witness ignition, the phases of fire development, and the indicators that lead to a flashover. Your firefighting team can learn about and witness first-hand ventilation-limited and fuel-limited fires. By experiencing these conditions, trainees can learn to recognize warning signs and develop nozzle skills that can delay flashover and permit a rapid escape from this dangerous phenomenon.

The Dräger Swede Phase 2 Burn Building expands on fire behavior lessons from Phase 1 and puts them in a controlled, live-fire training scenario to fight the fire.

In a 40-foot container, training now takes place on the same level as the fire. Your trainees enter the unit, identify the level of fire development, and use proper nozzle techniques to control the fire. Instructors maintain control throughout the scenario, operating the ventilation chimney.

The Phase 2 can be modified into a fully customized to fit your department’s unique preferences or requirements.

Sometimes Fire Departments or Academies need a more extensive single-level Swede that expands on fire behavior lessons from Phase 1 and puts them in a controlled, live-fire training scenario to fight the fire.

Dräger offers the capability to completely customize your Phase 2 to expand on its multipurpose skill facility. A Training Chief can add or remove components — even additional containers — to meet the specific needs.

The Dräger Swede Phase 4 Burn Building simulates an entry room with heat and smoke leading to a large live-fire room, providing additional fire attack scenarios to prepare firefighters for the realities of firefighting. Composed of two 40-foot containers side-by-side and a 20-foot container installed perpendicularly at the entry point of the burn chamber, this layout forms a hallway entry into a double-wide burn room for more advanced and dynamic scenarios. Dräger offers an optional car prop to simulate a more realistic garage fire scenario.

The Dräger’s Phase 5 Modified Burn Building structure expands on the Phase 5 unit. It includes a double-wide burn chamber, four or more cold containers and a variety of additional fire attack props – including a flat roof prop, a Denver Drill prop and angled ventilation. The Phase 5 Modified design can be further customized to meet the specific requirements of your fire department – such as incorporating additional props, changing the container arrangement and additional burn chambers, stairwells or levels. As a result, your department can maximize training at a fraction of the cost of permanent concrete structures – all without sacrificing quality.
