The Fire Ground: The Warm Zone Needs Monitoring and Protection from Cancer-Causing Particulates

The area close enough to the Hot Zone in which resources can be deployed rapidly but that SCBA on-air may not be required would be considered the Warm Zone. Byproducts of fire — particularly smoke (comprised of carcinogenic particulates) and toxic gases — may occur within the Warm Zone, requiring a constant and active monitoring process. Command can make the decision that personnel staged there may need to go on-air with a full SCBA and suit up in full PPE.

Initial cleaning of PPE must occur in the Warm Zone. Personnel transitioning out of the Hot Zone to rehabilitation (or rehab) in the Cold Zone need to maintain use of an SCBA on-air until initial, on-site cleaning (also known as “preliminary exposure reduction” and “gross decontamination”) concludes.

The elements requiring initial, on-site cleaning includes (but is not limited to) the following: Turnout gear, SCBA, Helmet, Gloves, Boots, Tools.

Personnel conducting the initial, on-site cleaning should be properly protected with a minimum of no-exposed skin and filtered breathing device.

X-plore 8000

Dräger X-plore 8000

The Dräger X-plore 8000 would be a good option on the personnel in the Warm Zone who may be exposed to heavy doses of particulates. For example, personnel performing initial, on-site PPE cleaning; or Fire Marshals during sifting through soot, ashes, etc. Consider pairing the PAPR with a Dräger X-am 5000 to assure there’s no prevalence of toxic gases.

UCF 9000

Dräger UCF 9000

The Dräger UCF 9000 thermal imaging camera includes a mode to determine if any hot spots remain that could flare up. Additionally, the UCF 9000 includes a regular still and video camera to aid in documenting the fire investigation.

Products details

Once a fire is considered “out,” the Warm Zone will usually grow to take in the former Hot Zone and even Incident area for the beginning of the Overhaul and Investigation process.

Moving from the Hot Zone, through the Warm Zone and eventually to the Cold Zone, a Decontamination Corridor may be established, both for consolidation of resources and accountability. This also serves as a good hand-off for victims found within the IDLH that may need medical evaluation or attention.

Dangerous Toxic Twin Toxic Gases for Firefighters

Where there is smoke, there are toxic gases. In fact, smoke inhalation causes 8 times as many deaths as burns in today’s structural fires. Two of the most deadly gases are carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) – known as the “toxic twins.” Together they create a chemical asphyxiant that can cause heart attacks and potential death.
