In compliance with OSHA regulations, monitoring of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) is mandatory in specific industrial applications. This task is achieved through a range of effective gas detection technologies. Infrared (IR) and Catalytic Bead (CatEx) are widely adopted methods. Moreover, Drager’s fixed gas detection systems offer additional detection alternatives like Open Path systems and cutting-edge technologies designed to detect fires or methane clouds.

LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) gas detectors are designed to monitor the concentration of flammable gases or vapors in the air and provide warnings when the concentration reaches or exceeds a potentially dangerous level. These monitors are important for maintaining personnel and plant safety in environments where flammable gases could lead to explosions or fires.

Polytron® 8700 IR Fixed Gas Detection System Overview

The Dräger Polytron® 8700 IR is an advanced gas detection system of flammable gases and vapors with explosion proof transmitter for the detection of combustible gases in the lower explosion limit (LEL). It uses a high performance infrared Dräger PIR 7000 sensor, which can quickly detect most common hydrocarbon gases.

The X-am 8000 supports various applications with specially developed assistant functions that guide you through each process step by step. During clearance measurement, for example, the smart assistant calculates the necessary flooding time for the device and probe (FKM hose) based on parameters such as measuring gases, temperature limits, and the indicated hose length. Additionally, customer defined flooding times are also possible.

When monitoring for potentially high methane concentrations, an optional automatic measurement range switch makes it easier to take a reading: If the Cat-Ex sensor measures values above 100 % LEL, the display switches to the range of 0 to 100 vol %. A similar function to measure in % LEL and vol % simultaneously is also available for the IR EX ES sensor.
