P100 Respirators in the workplace

A P100 respirator is a personal protective equipment (PPE) device designed to protect the user from inhaling hazardous airborne particles. This type of respirator is also effective for protecting against allergens, dust, and other harmful particles in the localized atmosphere.

The "P" in P100 indicates that the respirator is oil-proof, which is strongly resistant to oil, and can be used in work environments where oil-based particles are present.  The “100” in P100 expresses that the respirator will filter out at least 99.97% of airborne particles, including both solid and liquid aerosols. P100 respirators are commonly used in workplaces where workers are exposed to harmful dust, fumes, or particles.  They are used in a wide variety of applications such as sanding, grinding, cutting, and welding.  Their use in processing industries (such as coal and flour) is common.  Construction, demolition, manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, healthcare, and hazardous waste cleanup are other popular markets. While the P100 designation is most commonly used in the United States (under NIOSH standards), other countries use similar types, often labeled differently according to local standards.

This safety device can come in various forms, such as full-face or half-face masks, and often is used in conjunction with replaceable filter cartridges. Some manufacturers offer a limited-use, filtering facepiece style. Particulate respirators are also available in Powered Air Purifying Devices, commonly referred to as PAPRs.  Particulate filters for PAPRs are described as high-efficiency (HE) filters. 

Some federal and state regulations mandate the use of particulate respiratory protection depending upon the type of airborne particle, the exposure levels of the workplace, and the type of work performed.  Two examples of recently promulgated standards include MSHA’s Final Rule: Respirable Crystalline Silica and Cal/OSHA’s Emergency Temporary Silica Standard.
