Bump Testing a Gas Detector

A bump test is a quick check performed on gas detectors to ensure they can detect the presence of hazardous gases. During this test, a known concentration of test gas is briefly applied to the sensor to trigger the gas detector’s alarm. The alarm confirms that the sensors are functioning correctly, but it doesn't measure the accuracy of the readings.

A bump test ensures the device detects the target gas, confirms alarm functionality, and provides peace of mind to workers entering potentially hazardous environments.

Regular bump testing is essential for maintaining safety in environments where gas leaks could pose significant risks. It helps ensure that gas detectors are operational and capable of alerting users to potential dangers. And while not explicitly required by OSHA, bump testing is considered a best practice and is indirectly necessary to comply with their workplace safety standards like the General Duty Clause (Section 5(a)(1) of the OSH Act). Gas monitors are considered critical safety tools, and OSHA expects employers to ensure their proper functioning.

After Storage or Downtime: If the monitor hasn’t been used for an extended period.
Post-Exposure to Extreme Conditions: After exposure to high concentrations of gas, extreme temperatures, or physical shock.
