Driving Medical Device Interoperability in Acute Care

Did you know that up to 75% of medical devices around an ICU bed that could be integrated into hospital information systems are not integrated leading to incomplete records?[1] Also, a majority of 87% of physicians perceive administrative tasks as the main source for the increasing burden of job-related stress.[2] Financially, 35 billion US dollars of economic waste could be saved annually in the US health care system alone by a reduction of adverse events, avoidance of redundant testing, decreased manual documentation and shortening length of stay.[1]

Connected medical devices can process the data to actively impact the delivery of care and are designed to enhance human capabilities in patient care, not to replace them.

Learn more about Medical Device Interoperability

These examples underline the potential of interoperability between connected medical devices being applied in your hospital. Interoperability is the ability to seamlessly, automatically and securely exchange interpretable data between devices and systems within an information technology network in a standardised way without technical restrictions.[3],[4],[5]

Medical device interoperability can help to improve patient safety by reducing medical errors, increasing the efficiency of clinical and administrative processes through automation and remote capabilities while implementing a future-proof infrastructure that is based on open industry standards.

Making the vision tangible: Our Interoperability Showcase at HIMSS 2022

Taking care of isolated patients poses a major challenge in intensive care units. The direct patient care processes are inefficient and healthcare workers are exposed to the risk of infection. Together with Ascom, OR.NET and Epic, we designed a concept of a real-time medical system and  demonstrated how interoperability based on ISO/IEEE 11073 SDC could improve care delivery to infectious patients in the future. Find more information below how the future of ICU patient care in an isolation room could look like.

About HIMSS Interoperability Showcases

Interoperability showcases from the HIMSS are offered as interactive, educational presentations of concepts that “display the exchange, access and use of healthcare data through profiles and standards in real-time.” In a combined effort, various market participants such as medical systems manufacturers, healthcare providers and standards development organizations “demonstrate the power of standards-based healthcare interoperability by showcasing systems exchanging and using data in real-time to improve care, outcomes and experience.” The demonstrated solutions might be prototypes, approved products or a mix of both.
