Frequently Asked Questions
—An alcohol interlock is a breath alcohol measuring instrument coupled with a vehicle immobilizer. It will prevent a driver from starting a vehicle if their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) exceeds the programmed limit of 0.020% (AU) / 100 µg/l (NZ).
Yes, any other person can drive a vehicle that is fitted with an alcohol interlock and therefore should be trained on how to use the device. However, they will also have to provide a successful breath sample in order to start the vehicle. The participant of the program is responsible for any readings that are recorded on the device.
No, whilst you have an “I” condition endorsed on your licence and are participating in the Alcohol Interlock Program you must only drive a vehicle that is fitted with an approved alcohol interlock.
Refusal of an initial breath test is not a breach of the program. Should the driver only intend to turn on the radio or put the windows down, no initial breath test is required.
No, an insufficient breath sample will not result in a breach of the program. The unit will warn you that another breath sample has to be provided in case you have not e.g. provided enough air.
After a failed initial breath test due to detection of alcohol, the vehicle will not start and a temporary lockout will be activated. A countdown will show on the display the amount of time remaining before another breath test can be presented.
If a rolling retest is required, you must pull over to the side of the road to provide the breath sample. Please always check your display before leaving the vehicle. If a retest is required even though you have arrived at your destination, you must still provide the breath test. Do not turn off the vehicle without doing so, as this may be a breach of the program.
The regular service message on the display will warn you 7 days before your service is due and 7 days after. In case you are in violation mode, the device will only give you 7 days until it will lockout.
If you are late for a service appointment, the display on the device will count down the days until a permanent lockout occurs (e.g. “Device Lockout in x days”). If the service reminder is ignored, you will not be able to start the vehicle until the alcohol interlock is serviced. You will need to either request a Service Unlock Code or tow your vehicle to your Service Agent. Both will be at your own expense.
If any liquids or foods containing alcohol are consumed, the driver must wait 15 minutes prior to using the alcohol interlock. This is to ensure no mouth alcohol will influence the result. It is recommended to rinse the mouth with water before providing a breath sample.
Yes. Blowing smoke directly into the alcohol interlock may affect the device readings. You must wait 15 minutes prior to using an alcohol interlock. It is recommended to rinse the mouth with water before providing a breath sample.
Using any alcohol based hygiene products in the vehicle may affect the device readings. To avoid this, you must wait 15 minutes prior to using the alcohol interlock. If you have used any of these products, it is suggested that you open the windows and air out the vehicle.
It is recommended to exchange the mouthpiece regularly, minimum after one month. Each driver shall use his/her own mouthpiece. It’s important not to share the mouthpiece with another user.
It is recommended to clean the handset each time after driving, especially if someone else has used your vehicle.
To clean the handset follow the below 5 simple steps:
- Remove the mouthpiece.
- Wipe the handset using a disposable alcohol wipe only (ethanol based). Do not use any wipes containing other chemicals for cleaning, including common ones such as Lysol® or Clorox®. These can damage critical parts of the Dräger Interlock.
- Ensure that no liquid enters the gas inlet hole.
- Afterwards the handset has to dry off by storing in open air for at least 15 minutes.
- Insert the mouthpiece after the minimum waiting period of 15 minutes or before starting the next drive.
The repair shop should be informed of the existence of the alcohol interlock in the vehicle and how it is operated. For health and safety purposes you should also provide them with a clean mouthpiece in case they are required to start the vehicle in your absence. If the repair shop has to disconnect the battery, it should be done within 20 minutes. Otherwise a breach of the program may be recorded. It is suggested you keep all receipts from the mechanic to prove the vehicle was not in your possession at the time.
The installation process does not cause any damage to your vehicle. The control box is stored under the dashboard without any drilling of holes.
No, the Dräger Interlock uses minimum battery power. Problems only occur if there is already an electrical problem with your vehicle, such as a defective alternator, or if the vehicle battery is defective.
The alcohol interlock will not shut off the engine or stop the vehicle. It is only designed to prevent a driver under the influence from starting the vehicle. If you provide a failed retest while driving, the horn and lights/hazards will be activated but your vehicle will not stop. The horn and lights/hazards can only be deactivated when the vehicle is turned off. (Note: The activation of horn and lights/hazards is only applicable in certain legislative programs).
