Over the past decade, significant advances in the understanding of pulmonary aeration, respiratory drive and non-invasive respiratory management of preterm infants have helped to further reduce morbidity in even extremely preterm and very low birth weight infants1. In addition, increased early use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in neonatology can lead to a reduced number of ventilator induced lung injuries (VILI) and aid prevention of adverse complications associated with prolonged hospital stays and intubation2,3,4.
