Fighting neonatal mortality

The mortality rate of newborns in developing countries is still high. Bogale Worku (MD), Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health and Executive Director of the Ethiopian Paediatrics Society, talks about the challenges of neonatologists in Africa. He is disappointed that a lot of hospitals are still lacking innovative technology, resources and knowledge to help babies thrive and to involve parents in the care process. According to him, medical suppliers need to offer affordable technology to help reduce the mortality rates globally.

Neonatal Cooling

Perinatal asphyxia is a medical condition in newborns caused by an impairment of respiratory function which leads to hypoxemia and hypercapnia, resulting in metabolic acidosis. Hypoxic event may occur before, during or shortly after the birth and it may affect the brain as well as other organs, and in severe cases may lead to brain injury or even death.
