New Challenges for First Responders

In an era of technical progress and environmental awareness, alternative drive systems for vehicles have become much more important. However, in addition to their advantages, incidents involving these vehicles also bring with them special safety aspects.

In emergency situations involving alternatively powered vehicles, a wide range of behaviors can be exhibited. Regardless of the type of powertrain, one significant challenge is the potential release of flammable or toxic gases, vapors, and liquids. This may occur if the vehicle's fuel or gas storage integrity is compromised, or if a battery electric vehicle undergoes thermal runaway.

Such incidents may lead to:

  • An increased risk of explosions, especially where gases and vapors might accumulate in poorly ventilated areas like tunnels and garages.
  • Exposure to toxic substances for both responders and victims, particularly when proper protective equipment (PPE) is not worn.
  • The risk of jet flames and deflagration.

Alternative Drives - Ensuring First Responder Safety - Informational graphic titled "Incidents involving battery-powered vehicles" describing "Scenario 1 – Without flames." It highlights visible white vapor and dark smoke, which may be mistaken for steam, loud hissing and popping sounds indicating thermal runaway, and a mixture of toxic and/or flammable substances like Hydrogen, Methane, CO, and NO₂.

It highlights toxic emissions from burning materials, the need for SCBA and full PPE, elevated hydrogen fluoride levels in burning battery-electric vehicles, and the importance of proper post-incident hygiene for firefighters.

One important component lies in gas detection - an accurate process of identifying and measuring potentially hazardous gases in such scenarios.
