Reliable protection against harmful particles and aerosols: the X-plore series FFP dust masks are designed for single use and are suitable for a wide range of application areas, such as painting, woodworking, and in agriculture and industry. The dust protection masks come in three different versions: the pre-formed X-plore 1300 series, the folded X-plore 1700 dust mask series and the X-plore 1900 series with a three-part folded design. All single-use dust protection masks (FFP masks) are available in three EN protection classes: FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3. They can also be ordered with a special exhalation valve for reduced breathing resistance.

Protection classes rate FFP mask efficiency

Particle filtering respiratory protection (filtering facepieces) is categorised by its protective factor. The protection level – FFP1, FFP2 or FFP3 – indicates how high the concentration of harmful substances (contaminants) can be without posing a health risk to the user. The higher the contaminant concentration, the higher the FFP protection class needs to be. Learn more about the differences between FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 here.

FFP1

When the contaminant concentration reaches four times the occupational exposure limit (OEL), FFP1 masks must be worn. FFP1 masks can filter up to 80 percent of all contaminants that are fundamentally non-toxic and are water or oil-based.
These masks protect against non-toxic dust particles, for example, such as those from pulp, cement, plaster, chalk or pollen.

sanding, planing, cutting and drilling into concrete, masonry, iron, rust;
cleaning tasks that produce dust

FFP2

FFP2 masks can be used in environments where the contaminant concentration reaches up to ten times the occupational exposure limit. They filter up to 94 percent of toxic water and oil-based contaminants. Masks with this rating also offer protection against toxic dust particles, such as those from calcium oxide, concrete, granite or zinc oxide fumes.

FFP3

With FFP3 masks, the contaminant concentration must not exceed thirty times the occupational exposure limit. FFP3 masks filter up to 99 percent of all water and oil-based contaminants, which are harmful to health, carcinogenic or radioactive. They protect against toxic dust, for example, from chrome, cobalt, nickel or mould spores.

What are the differences between FFP2, N95 and KN95?

FFP2, KN95 and N95 are descriptions of protection classes for particle filtering half masks that have been approved in different countries. In comparison, the contents of the approvals show similarities as well as differences. In the case of N95 and KN95 masks, only the material is tested for possible leakages. In addition to this test, for FFP2 masks, tests are also carried out on a test subject.

Filters are classified according to their capacity (gas filters) or their efficiency (particle filters). The particle filter class indicates how efficiently particles are filtered from the ambient air. Pre-formed single-use dust mask

Pre-formed mask body with large interior volume to make it comfortable to wear and easier for the user to speak. The Dräger X-plore^® 1300 is available in all three EN protection classes (FFP1, FFP2, FFP3).

Effective protection against particles

The Dräger X-plore 1300 is the modern generation of pre-formed particle filtering half masks for effective protection against fine dust as well as solid and liquid particles in tasks involving heavy exposure to dust. It is available in all three EN protection classes (FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3). Odour-stopping versions equipped with an additional activated carbon layer are also available to counteract unpleasant smells.

Optimal fit

The dust mask is available in two sizes (S and M/L). This makes it suitable for many different shapes and sizes of face, so each wearer can choose the right size for an optimal fit. The three-part folding design offers high flexibility in terms of fit, so the mask easily adjusts to the wearer’s face. It also ensures that the mask stays firmly in position. Even when the wearer speaks, the mask does not shift.

Exceptional comfort

Thanks to the latest high-performance filtering materials, the particle filtering half mask allows the wearer to breathe with virtually no resistance. The optional models fitted with a CoolMAX exhalation valve reduce breathing resistance even further while also helping prevent the accumulation of warmth and moisture inside the mask. This provides relief for the user, especially during strenuous physical activities, and makes breathing even more comfortable.

FFP questions and answers

Is it possible to process (single-use) FFP masks for reuse?

Unfortunately it is not possible to process the FFP masks from Dräger for reuse.

All FFP masks contain electrostatic filter materials. The charge of these materials is destroyed by heat, radioactive radiation, UV radiation and the like, causing the mask to lose most of its filtration properties. Disinfectants like isopropyl, ethanol and other cleaning agents also destroy the charge of the filter material.

Since all of the aforementioned approaches permanently damage the filter material, Dräger is not working on developing a reprocessing method. In this respect, observe the information provided in the instructions for use for the product in question.

Can I use FFP masks even if the shelf life expiry date has passed?

As the manufacturer, Dräger advises against using its FFP masks and respiratory filters if they are expired. It is impossible to make any statements across the board as to how effective they actually still are. For example, an expired FFP3 mask may no longer provide the effective protection required by an FFP3 rating. The reason for this is that electrostatic properties of the filter material degrades as the years progress. Only testing in an approved lab with the appropriate equipment can deliver information based on the EN 149 standard, which can then be checked and measured against the current performance of the mask.

How long can I use my FFP?

One FFP is good to wear for no more than eight hours, i.e. one shift. If there is an infective agent like a virus in the environment, the FFP must be disposed of as soon as it is taken off. This information is also provided in the instructions for use for the product. Also note the stipulations of DGUV Rule 112-190 of the German Social Accident Insurance. One of the reasons for this is the way the mask is put on and removed. When putting it on again, it is impossible to ensure that the potentially contaminated exterior of the mask has not come into contact with the interior of the mask or even directly with the face of the user. Moreover, it is not clear in this process what has happened to the mask in the meantime: after being removed the first time, where and how was it kept? Did any other person potentially come into contact with the mask?

Does a surgical face mask offer the same protection as a breathing mask?

A surgical mask is designed to prevent liquid aerosols from coming into contact with the nose and mouth of the wearer, and to protect others from droplets breathed out by the wearer. A respiratory protection mask (breathing mask) protects the wearer from breathing in fine particles and droplets in the air.

It may be beneficial for a layperson to wear a surgical mask in order to protect others, if the wearer is at risk of spreading infectious agents.

Which respiratory protection masks protect against the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19)?

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recommends using FFP2 or FFP3 masks as personal protective equipment when treating and caring for patients infected with the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19).

The rules and regulations of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) advise wearing FFP3 respiratory protection when working with airborne biological agents in risk group 3, based on normal workplace situations.
