What sustainability means to us

Sustainability and continuous development are essential parts of our DNA and company history at Dräger. For us, our guiding principle of "Technology for Life" means taking responsibility. We make a positive contribution to society and the environment in a variety of ways through our products. With our systems and processes, we ensure that resources are used sparingly and guard against potential risks that might arise from our business activities. We believe that our company's success depends on sustainability. This compels us to conduct our business responsibly across all our international locations and throughout our supply chain. We believe that respect for the law as well as free and fair competition must be at the heart of any commercial activity – free from corruption and in respect to human rights.

Our goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.

We are committed to Germany's Climate Protection Law, which aims for carbon neutrality by 2045. An important milestone along the way will be to reduce emissions 33% by 2025, compared to 2015.

Our sustainability priorities

All our activities are focused on ensuring Dräger's long-term survival. This requires us to operate sustainably while also succeeding financially. To do so, we must ensure the long-term satisfaction of our customers, suppliers, investors, and neighbors in the locations where we operate. Based on this, we have defined four priorities for operating sustainably. We have set specific strategic targets that we want to expand in the coming years, and we want to continually improve our company while helping to overcome major challenges facing society. For details, please read our latest sustainability report.

1. Improving access to healthcare worldwide.

Health care

The number of people in need of intensive care - as well as their average ages - will continue to rise in the decades ahead. Hospitals are already strained due to limited capacity and a shortage of facilities. This is why we have set a goal of reducing the physical and psychological burden on acute-care doctors and nurses by automating routine tasks and therapy processes and supporting clinical decision-making. We do this with solutions based on networking and intelligent interaction between medical technology and emergency care providers. We are also committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of the nearly 15,900 employees who work for us. This is why we have set additional goals that include working to promote and maintain the health of our employees and to ensure safe workplaces and working conditions.

2. We strive for a future where everyone is safe at work.

Future

Every day, our products and services protect hundreds of thousands of people at their work. Using Smart Safety (networking our gas detection systems, respiratory protection equipment and the data analyses they provide), we enable our customers to identify unsafe situations earlier and manage them more efficiently. That's why we are already working on the networked solutions of tomorrow. We believe that every workplace accident is avoidable. To reach our goal of Vision Zero – a world without workplace accidents – we will continue to foster a culture of workplace safety.

3. We protect the environment through our own activities and help our customers do the same.

Environment

Our safety technology products and services help reduce emissions and prevent pollution. In the future, we want to position ourselves as an expert partner in climate protection. This will mean expanding our product and service portfolio to include measuring methane emissions, which are highly harmful to the environment. We are also exploring the possibilities of operating in the hydrogen economy of the future.

We also see great potential in helping hospitals to reduce their environmental impact. We want to help our customers successfully implement a "green hospital" strategy. That's why we are developing products and solutions that minimize emissions from anesthetic gases that are harmful to the environment. We are actively working to build partnerships that will help drive this strategy forward. Climate protection is at the top of our internal goals for environmental management. Dräger is addressing long-term decarbonization in accordance with the climate-protection aims of the United Nations.

4. We choose our suppliers carefully and work with them to implement our vision across the supply chain

Suppliers

We work with more than 2,500 suppliers. That's why together with a carefully selected supplier base we make a valuable contribution to the sustainable economy. In particular, we focus on high quality standards when it comes to "Technology for Life". Every new supplier and contract must meet a range of sustainability criteria. Our supply chain has a major influence on the way our products are manufactured which is why we make sure our suppliers also adhere to sustainability criteria.

Our priorities

Environment

We are committed to the UN climate protection goals. We handle resources responsibly and systematically reduce our carbon footprint. In addition, our products and services help our customers live up to their responsibilities towards people and the environment all over the world. By 2025, we want to reduce our global CO₂ emissions by 33% compared to 2015. In the long term, we are committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2045.

Waste as a raw material

Medical and safety technologies require high-performance materials and metals. Dräger's waste management system returns end-of-life products back to the economic cycle.

umweltbewusste-anaesthesie-3-2-D-3346-2018.jpg

Environmentally friendly anesthetics

The World Medical Association has declared a climate emergency and called for climate neutrality by 2030. One area showing remarkable potential for improvement is the development of environmentally friendly anesthetics. Conventional narcotic gases are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.

Human rights

Respecting human rights is an essential part of our social responsibility. We do not tolerate unethical work practices such as child labor, forced labor, modern slavery or work paid for through human trafficking. This applies to our own companies, our contract partners, and our suppliers. We do not tolerate threats or any form of violence against employees in the workplace. In addition, we expect all employees to treat co-workers and business partners with courtesy, fairness, and respect.

As a member of the "Made in Germany – Made by Diversity" campaign since 2019, Dräger - along with 49 other German family businesses - is committed to promoting tolerance and inclusivity. The initiative's guiding principle states, "We believe in working together with peace and respect for each other, regardless of a person's origin or cultural background."

Dräger is also a member of Genderdax, a gender and diversity project initiated by the Technical University of Applied Sciences in Lübeck, Germany. Genderdax is based on the practical application of science and promotes the inclusion of women in technical and management positions.

Diversity charter

Diversity is an invaluable source of strength to our company. A diverse workforce helps us achieve better results. It enables us to see different perspectives and integrate them into our business activities. That's why we strive for diversity and equality of opportunity in all areas of our business. We see it as our duty to confront and prevent unfairness and discrimination. We do not tolerate discrimination on the grounds of ethnicity, nationality, gender, religion, ideology, age, disability or sexual identity. In 2008, Dräger signed the German "Charta der Vielfalt," which means, "Diversity Charter" in English. The aim of the charter is to advance the cause of accepting, appreciating and integrating diversity in the workplace.

Safety and health at work

In many sectors across the globe, the name "Dräger" is synonymous with safety at work – particularly in manufacturing, mining or firefighting. Our products and expertise play a vital role in making workplaces safer. In addition to products, our customers increasingly rely on us as a provider of technical safety services, even trusting us with partial or complete implementation of safety processes at their locations. That's why we uphold a high standard of workplace safety for ourselves, our suppliers, and our customers.

Putting Vision Zero into practice

The safety and health of our employees is very important to us. We believe that every workplace accident is avoidable. Our goal is to achieve Vision Zero – a world without workplace accidents. Every industrial plant is different, and each poses unique challenges for workplace safety which we must overcome in order to achieve Vision Zero. Shoe seller is leading the way

Tests have shown that up to 20 percent of freight containers are contaminated with toxins. When opened, this can pose a health hazard. That’s why Deichmann - Germany's largest shoe retailer – tests all containers before opening them.
