An alcohol tester analyzes the breath by measuring the amount of alcohol present in the exhaled air. This measurement is then used to calculate the blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

Certain foods or drinks can temporarily affect the readings. It is recommended that you wait 15 minutes after eating or drinking before taking the alcohol breathalyzer test.

To undertake an active breath alcohol test, a test subject uses a mouthpiece and blows directly into the device. This method provides an accurate measurement. 
A passive breath alcohol test involves testing the ambient air around a test subject, they may be asked to blow directly on to or near to the device or into a funnel, a mouthpiece is not used. This test will detect the presence of alcohol but will not provide a measurement.

Modern breathalyzers are very accurate and can measure blood alcohol concentration with an accuracy of ±0.01% BAC, provided they are properly calibrated and used correctly.
