Sami Kallio | Designer, Furniture Maker, Explorer, Gothenburg, Sweden

Episode One 'THE NATURE OF DESIGN'

For Sami Kallio, going into the forest is like going to church. He acknowledges trees as living organisms and feels sorry for cutting them down and making furniture out of them. In his craft, he says one has to be a designer, an artist and a cabinet maker. Curious, patient and perhaps a bit crazy. In the first episode of the Dräger original series, BeyondMasks, we join Sami Kallio at the heart of passion in his workshop in Gothenburg, Sweden. Here, he designs and crafts his own unique furniture.

BeyondMasks | Episode One: The Nature of Design

Designing from the Ground Up

The process usually starts with a detail from which the whole piece grows.

“People fall in love with one detail.”

The process usually starts with a detail from which the whole piece grows. Unlike other cabinet makers, Sami doesn't start with a digital design. He begins with a shape, a component or a wooden joint. He always begins by crafting a single piece, forming the basis of the model for any future reconstructions. It is almost comparable to sculpting. Once the chair, stool or table has its final form, Sami begins measuring it from top to bottom, recreating a digital model.

Dräger X-plore® 8000 System

Dräger X-plore® 8000 System
with Face Shield

Sami relies on the X-plore® 8000 system for his work. It combines a powered air-purifying respirator with a face shield for optimal protection from dust, fumes and splinters. The respirator unit can be worn around the back or waist and provides the wearer with a constant flow of clean air. The blower unit and face shield provide combined eye and respiratory protection. All components are widely self-explanatory and easy to handle and maintain.

The X-plore® 8000 series is especially designed for a comfortable fit over a long period of time. The rugged blower unit can furthermore be combined with a wide range of headpieces for even more specialised applications.

Episode Two 'THE JOY OF BEAUTY'

In the North of Italy, in the renowned province of Massa-Carrara lives  sculptor and teacher, Christian Lange. His studio is right at the foot of the mountain range, where one of the most precious working materials can be found: white marble from Carrara. Christian moved here from Germany for his vocation, sculpting. He is shaping his workpieces with traditional tools like a chisel as well as modern tools like saws and grinders. As an experienced craftsman, he passes his knowledge on to international apprentices and always strives to expand upon his own knowledge by working in close collaboration with artists. Christian’s constant drive is his unbroken enthusiasm for his craft and unique raw material.

Given Beauty by Nature

Up in the iconic quarry of Carrara, Italy’s most famous white marble is cut right out of the mountain.

“I preserve beauty, not manufacture it.”

Up in the iconic quarry of Carrara, Italy’s most famous white marble is cut right out of the mountain. In large and heavy blocks, it is taken for further processing. For Christian Lange, it is a very special material as it is not crafted by mankind like plastic but given by nature. The unique texture and structure of every block make it an even more fascinating material to work with. The dazzling white marble was formed approximately thirty million years ago and was already used by sculptors during the height of the Roman Empire.

Achieving Unique Perfection

Fred’s work mainly revolves around cutting, shaping and polishing components made of various materials, including metals, wood, plastic or even rubber.

“I like when things are done well.”

Fred’s work mainly revolves around cutting, shaping and polishing components made of various materials, including metals, wood, plastic or even rubber. Each of his custom bikes is a meticulously designed rarity down to the last detail. Fred therefore uses only a minimum of prefabricated parts, and custom-makes almost every other aspect of the motorcycle by hand. This approach comes with the regular need for potent respiratory protection against hazards such as fine dust or chemical vapours.

Building Dreams

Tiny dust particles are floating in the light, a smell of resin hangs in the air, while grinding noises add the soundtrack.

“If I felt that I couldn't ensure someone's safety, I wouldn't still be doing this.”

Tiny dust particles are floating in the light, a smell of resin hangs in the air, while grinding noises add the soundtrack. All boats that leave the hangar of KZN Leisure Boats are individually hand-built according to the needs and specifications of their new owners. The production includes molding the body out of fibreglass, sanding the hull, crafting the interior and the paint job once the boats are finished. Managing all these steps requires vast experience, good teamwork and strong leadership. For Yugeshni, however, another point is crucial above all: the safety of her staff.
